In Narberth at this time of year there is a hive of activity with lots of Christmas events and Christmas shopping going on! It is a mecca for independent shops and in particular craft shops and art galleries. Perhaps the most popular is the well established Susie’s Uggs workshop owned, managed and run by the very experienced and effervescent Susie! At this time of year she and her merry crew work long into the night making sure Christmas orders are met. This I am told can be challenging but customers know they can rely on a great service and hundreds of parcels are sent off in time for Christmas.
The boots have a unique design and a very wide range of colour combinations. The boots and slippers have a warm and cosy feeling and are so comfortable to wear! I say this from experience! Phone Susie on 01834 861047 for a real person and great customer service. Our visitors to Old Oak Barn often drop by and go back year after year because they know they get wonderful original hand made footwear which will last and last. Photos 3 and 4 courtesy of Susie’s website and Owen but the rest I took!
Susie also does bags and hats and other goodies. Check out their website which now has an online shop too!
Garden of Wales
Only a short drive from Old Oak Barn, The National Botanic Gardens of Wales have some great events coming up this Autumn. The garden is both a visitor attraction and a centre for research and conservation. It has the world’s largest single-span glasshouse measuring 110m long by 60m wide designed by Lord Foster. Nearly all our visitors drop in for the afternoon or for longer. During this summer 2015 children have been treated to lots of extra activities. We think you too will enjoy a visit this Autumn. It is one of Carmarthenshire’s top attractions!
The programme for September at The Garden of Wales is as follows:-
Orchid Festival (the 5th and 6th);
World music ‘Month of Sundays’ (6th, 13th, 20th & 27th);
Chrysanthemum Weekend (12th and 13th);
Food Fair (September 19-20);
Over 50s Day – with Special VIP guest Esther Rantzen on the 25th;
MG car rally on the 27th;
Tuesday Tours of the Great Glasshouse (Sep 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29).
Please visit their website for lots more information on what to expect. It is open nearly every single day of the year from 10.am. Just closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day infact!
Breathtaking – can only describe the scenery and wildlife as some of the most beautiful in the whole of Wales. To see bluebells not under trees is awesome. We loved every minute. Sleeping in the hostel is fine and more luxurious than anticipated. Taking all food and drink for the 24 hours was perfectly manageable too. We did have to book the accommodation last year as it is so popular and there is only room in the hostel for 14 overnighters.
Skomer is accessible from the little harbour at Martin’s Haven and for those wanting a day trip boats sail (weather permitting) just three times a day. Contact Dale-sailing for more details. You have to be prepared to queue in the popular weeks ie Whitsun half term.
Looking towards St Brides Bay and Solva from the island. We also saw porpoises from the island and from the ferry crossing. And of course we saw the worlds largest population of Manx Shearwater returning around half eleven at night from their days feeding in the Irish Sea. What a fabulous noise they made!!
The little boat arrived to pick us up the next morning and take us safely back to the mainland – the crossing to Skomer is quite short and only takes about 15 minutes. Experienced crewmen know the seas well and don’t take risks if forecasts are poor. so crossings can be cancelled at short notice.
We think you will love Skomer 2015 too! Come and stay at Old Oak Barn in June and have a look for yourselves. We currently have two short breaks available around June 6th and June 21st. Phone on 01994230716 for more details.
You can see more pics of puffins in our other blogs!
Coasteering in PembrokeshireJust look at the delight on the face of this young visitor to Pembrokeshire’s top adventure activity!
Celtic Quest Coasteering is a well established company which has built up a big fan base because of the awesome way it organises coasteering off the Pembrokeshire Coast. It is now recognised as THE best visitor experience in Wales and is run by Cleopatra Browne who in the film below demonstrates what happens. Anyone can try Coasteering. The whole family can enjoy it at their own level and speed, as all aspects of the adventures are optional. That includes those who may feel nervous or are non-swimmers. Go to the website for more details – if staying at Old Oak Barn we can contact Cleopatra and help you plan your week. Excellent attention is always given to keeping everyone safe and happy!
We think you will really love the day!
The reviews say it all! “What an experience this is, like nothing I had ever done before but a massively enjoyable one that I would definitely do again. The team were friendly and informative as well as supportive to anyone having difficulty or trepidation about launching themselves of the side of the country into the sea. A great mix of elements carried out in a very professional but enjoyable manner. I would highly recommend this.” Ben gives it a massive 5 out of 5! 25.03.2015
Easter Holidays in Wales
Old Oak Barn is at the moment available from Friday 10 April in Wales in 2015. Please ask for the latest price! We are very child friendly!
There is lots to do this Easter in this part of Wales. Apart from exploring the wonderful countryside and coastline Folly Farm is open every day during the holiday season. Have you met the lions yet? Did you know that Folly Farm is rated the fourth best zoo in the country. What started off as a small farm playground 25 years ago has grown and grown and is now one of Wales’s best attractions and it is only 25 minutes from Old Oak Barn! Quite often they have Peppa Pig or some other children’s favourites attending during half terms and holidays – so keep an eye out for more details!
Please get in touch if you would like more details of a break at Old Oak Barn this Easter. We often have glorious weather in April and in the past visitors have even been known to go for an early dip in the sea. It is often fine enough for a camp fire in the woods here or a BBQ on the patio in the late afternoon.
Birdsong is at its best too with over 50 species spotted at this time of year!

Anna’s Welsh Zoo
30 minutes from Old Oak Barn near Tenby is Anna’s Welsh Zoo which is also known as Manor House Wildlife Park. It offers a very hands on experience in four “Zoonique Animal Walkthroughs” where you can get right up close for example to wallabies and lemurs.
When we visited in July 2014 we found the animals to be very contented and calm and were struck with the well thought out environment. It’s not perfectly tidy but the animals like the piles of random wood which has been left for a purpose. We loved the baby wallabies which we could almost touch inside their mother’s pouches. The baby meerkats were very humourous larking about in their family groups. Set in 52 organic acres there is lots to see and do.
These two amazing emus will greet you on arrival!
This rhino is not real but stands guard all the same.; young children will love the green lawns where some much loved trikes were in demand and our 2 year old grandson adored the willow tunnel.
The meerkats are comical to watch and don’t seem to mind an audience!
So apart from the rhinos, apes, zebras, oryx, tapirs, emus.camels and lamas etc there is lots to see and do. Currently under construction is a big undercover play area.
Visit annaswelshzoo for more details.
We had a fantastic day out at Skomer last week and certainly for many visitors this is the highlight of their week in Wales.
The bluebells were amazing!
If you stay at Old Oak Barn it will mean an early start to catch the ferry at Martins Haven but that is all part of the adventure. The crossing to Skomer only takes about 10 – 15 minutes. The booking system has changed now and is much better in that as soon as you arrive you go to the award winning visitor centre Lockley Lodge and get your tickets for the boarding which will be from 10 O’clock onwards. There is a fee of approx £11 for the crossing and £10 for the landing so for £21 per adult it is not cheap but well worth it! SO if you catch the 12 noon ferry you can go for a walk to Deer’s Park for example and then just queue for the boat 10 minutes before departure.
We can provide maps and directions for visitors wanting to explore this beautiful little island. Approx 1.5 miles across and 2 miles wide it is fairly tiring but where else can you see porpoises, puffins, short eared owls, guillemots, razorbills and of course big Skomer rabbits all in the same place! Visit Skomer and we don’t think you will be disappointed at all!
St Clears Vintage Tractor Run 2014
S4C were there filming the event as over 80 tractors of all shapes and sizes congregated in Pwll Trap before heading off to the village of St Clears main car park. Then off they went up Station Road turning right up Gibeon Road and going right past Old Oak Barn towards Bancyfelin. Through Wern farmyard and then on the back road back into Meidrim where we got our fourth and final view!
In Meidrim some went back into St Clears and some chose to go up the hill past the church and back down Salem road to end up at The White Lion in Pwll Trap.
