Skomer – Lets see the Puffins!Boat arrives at Skomer from St Martin's Haven every morning
Boat arrives at Skomer from St Martin’s Haven every morning

The Skomer Puffins draw many visitors to Wales every year. We think Skomer is one of West Wales’ most beautiful islands with it’s amazing variety of wildlife. Last year BBC filmed on the island with Iolo Williams. The famous Welsh naturalist is much respected and the series of programmes must have done much to encourage even more visitors to see for themselves the Puffins, Guillemots, Razorbills and Shearwater not to mention the seals and smaller birds.

Taking the exhilarating high speed Rigid Inflatable Boat “Sea Safari” to and around the islands is great fun too but my favourite has to be to land on the island and spend the whole day exploring. Several years ago I was a last minute replacement voluntary warden for a few days and with two sisters alongside me we had quite an adventure. In those days the facilities were very primitive with no hot water but now the sleeping quarters are much more comfortable. It did enable me to appreciate the island around the clock and the midnight walk to see the shearwaters is a fond memory.

Skomer Flowers

The island has an amazing variety of wild flowers and is often awash with bluebells and red campion in the early summer months.  Visitors to Puffin House sometimes visit more than once during their stay in Broad Haven as it is only 20 minutes or so to catch the ferry from Martin’s Haven which departs daily at 10am, 11am and 12 noon (1st April – 31st October) No Landings on Monday (except Bank Holidays) Island is Closed mid May for 3 days normally to do a bird count – please check when but usually extra Round Island Cruises will be available on these days from 10.00am

Or you can enjoy an evening Seabird Spectacular boat trip and as the sun is setting on Skokholm and the Skomer Marine Nature Reserve, the Manx Shearwaters are rafting, awaiting the cover of darkness to return to their nests on these beautiful Pembrokeshire Islands. We have done this trip and I can really recommend it on a beautiful summer’s evening especially. The darker it becomes, the noisier the birds become and enjoying the great rafts of Puffins, Guillemots, Razorbills & Manx Shearwater as they return after a day’s fishing from far out at sea is not to be missed!  You may even be lucky and see dolphins or porpoises.

Look carefully below and you will see a list of birds spotted one day in June!

Skomer Puffins

At the end of the day return to Martin’s Haven from Skomer – the small boat can only take about 80 people and will just drop off 3 times dadily so the island being highly protected is never full of people. No booking is needed as sailings depend on the weather but during Whitsun Bank Holiday weekend for example it is essential to get there early and just be prepared to queue for a bit!
