Red Kites in Carmarthenshire, Wales
The Red Kites have returned to this part of Wales in their hundreds! 40 years ago when we first moved to Carmarthenshire there were very few nesting pairs left and they were highly protected. Now they are everywhere including here at Old Oak Barn! The big comeback of the Red Kites has been a phenomenol success story.
Visitors can visit The Carmarthenshire Feeding Station if they want to see the magnificent birds being fed. The Llanddeusant Red Kite Feeding Station has been open over 10 years now. It was started up by a local partnership. It had support from the Brecon Beacons National Park, the Welsh Red Kite Trust and various other wildlife organisations. It provides bird lovers with an ideal opportunity to witness Red Kites, Buzzards and other birds feeding. Visitors can sit in the specially built hide only feet away from diving birds. You can observe them competing naturally for the meat provided by the feeding centre at regular times throughout the year.
The day this was taken there must have been well over 200 birds flying around although the website does claim about 50 feed regularly. The RSPB website gives more information on this impressive bird including its “Amber” status. This is presumably because it had an historical population decline during 1800–1995. This is now recovering with population size having more than doubled over the last 25 years
It will cost just £4 for adults and the station can be easily enough found – From Carmarthen (A40) – Take A40 to Llandeilo, then towards Llandovery. Approx 6 miles from Llandeilo turn right onto A4069 into the village of Llangadog. In village take right turn toward Brynamman. Follow road until you see the Three Horse Shoes (no longer a pub ) and turn left over river towards Llanddeusant. Follow road round to right through the hamlet of Twynllanan and on into Llanddeusant. Turn left towards Myddfai. Feeding centre 200 yards on right. Parking is provided near the feeding centre.
